Banged up Hanley Ramirez, Andre Ethier out of lineup

LOS ANGELES – Hanley Ramirez and Andre Ethier will sit out Friday night's game against the San Diego Padres as Don Mattingly gives them a break to deal with a variety of aches and pains.

Mattingly said that Ethier's multiple physical issues have caused a noticeable drop on the outfielder's energy, and he hopes some rest will "get it resolved." Speaking specifically of Ramirez, Mattingly said he has no plans for the shortstop to take a trip to the DL, but that he will "try not to use him" tonight.

Scott Van Slyke will start in center field in place of Ethier, and Miguel Rojas will man the shortstop position for Ramirez, and Mattingly said the strong play of both players made it easier to rest his two regulars.

Rojas is hitting just .232 this season, but he did hit his first major league home run earlier this week off reigning AL Cy Young winner Max Scherzer, and has played brilliant defense at multiple infield spots.

Van Slyke started the season as a spot starter against left-handed pitchers -- and he has crushed them. But he has been doing damage to righties as he has gained more opportunities recently, and now has a .785 OPS with two home runs in 61 at bats vs righties, compared to his off-the-charts 1.125 OPS with six homers in 60 at bats vs. lefties.

In other news, Mattingly said infielder Justin Turner is making progress in his rehab work for a hamstring injury. Turner is working out in Arizona, but the manager said it was "up in the air" whether Turner would be ready for the Dodgers' first series after the All-Star break, which begins July 18 in St. Louis.

He also said there was a "pretty good chance" Paul Maholm would start against the Padres on Saturday in place of the injured Josh Beckett.
